Door Sweeps
Sometimes referred to as draft stoppers, door sweeps are narrow strips of material designed to prevent outside air and other natural elements from entering your home through the underside of exterior doors. Common types include:
- Strip door sweeps. Available with either adhesive backing or rigid metal or plastic pieces that stick to the bottom edge of the door, this popular option is designed to create a barrier—without making it more difficult to open or close the door.
- Bristle door sweeps. These sweeps resemble miniature brooms, allowing them to not only seal off the bottom side of the door, but also help clear away dust and debris.
- Flat door sweeps. Generally offering a more attractive appearance than bristle sweeps, flat door sweeps are made from materials such as nylon, silicone, or vinyl.
Door seals—also known as door bottoms—function similarly to door sweeps. They either attach directly to the bottom of the door, or wrap the entire bottom on one or both sides. While door seals may create a more effective barrier than sweeps, they tend to have a bulkier appearance.
Window Insulation Kits
If you’ve noticed drafts coming in around your windows but you are not ready to replace them yet, window insulation kits may offer an effective solution. These kits consist of plastic, magnetic, or reflective foil materials that are applied to the window in order to create a barrier against drafts and improve energy efficiency.
